Jovium Surprise Major at Huntington, N Yorks
Some Jovium Surprise Major being rung on a Huntington practice night, filmed 19/06/2024.
Huntington is a village just outside of York. The chancel dates from the 15th century, and the tower from 1874, to the design of by C T Newstead. The tower contains a light ring of eight bells. The back five were cast in 1881 by Warners, replacing two previous bells, and hung in an oak frame by Thomas Mallaby of Masham. They were augmented to six just three years later, also by Warners, with the treble being given by subscription. The bells were rehung in the early 1960s, and later augmented to eight by Whitechapel in 1977, for the Queen's Silver Jubilee. They form a very easy-going little octave, whic...

Bell Ringing at Birdsall, N Yorkshire

Ringing for a wedding on this little three, filmed 11th May 2024. Birdsall village (of which there is now very little) was once a monastic site. Following the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1540, the Sotheby family acquired the land from the church and built a small Tudor house; since 1719, Birdsall House has been owned by the Willoughby family. A church was recorded in Birdsall in 1130; how...

The final touch from today's service ringing (Sunday 11th February 2024). I had to leave slightly early for another commitment, but it was a treat to stand outside for a couple of minutes listening to some Stedman being rung on these magnificent bells. Listen out for the Queens! 1925 Taylors; need I say more. Ho Ho Ho! Tenor 59-1-23 in Bflat dove.cccbr.org.uk/tower/11340

A touch of Stedman Triples on the (rather splendid) back 8 at St Mary le Bow, the final touch of the day on The Lilliputters Guild's Christmas Outing. Listen out for the backrounds, Whittingtons and Tittums! Whilst there were a couple of method mistakes (mostly down to tiredness), it was a generally solid touch and a fine way to finish the day. The opening touch, a short series of call-changes, rung by The Lilliputters Guild as part of our Christmas Outing (Thursday 28th December 2023). Bow could be considered *the* most famous ring of bells in London, thanks to their associations in popular culture, not least in the nursery rhyme, Oranges and Lemons. Dick Whittington - thrice Mayor of London - is reckoned, in popular folklore and pan...

York Colleges Guild ringing some Plain Hunt on this pleasant mid-weight eight. The back six were cast by Warners in 1914, and augmented to eight by Taylors in 1952. I believe the Warner bells were tuned at this time; apparently, Taylors were less than complimentary about their tone! They sound good, are crystal clear, and handle very nicely, although the tenor lacks a bit of hum and the 3&4 are...

For a light 10 it's still 26cwt. A really sweet 10 i think
24cwt
@AshleyMonck69 and 3 quarters, if you truly want to be pedantic. Still a lovely 10 without a doubt.
Duct tape 😂
Why is there duct tape on the tenors Clapper?
Looks like it may be there to stop the bolts falling out.
They had that at st Paul's cathedral and the 11th clapper broke and I think I happened to the tenor aswell.
I can’t believe this video is 10 years old.
Decent little 8 these. Rung here many times, agree that they aren't the most tuneful but are certainly very user-friendly and easy to get good ringing on!
Majestic tone
Amazing bells.
Wonderful 😊
What night is practice night at Monmouth? Thanks.
They seem to have some clapper lifters on the back bells?
Might be better without them!
@@timmeh1507 exactly!! I may be wrong but i recall them saying the back bells had clapper lifters. This is one tower where the bells not singing much is probably a better idea...
Some really good ringing, but some strange harmonics going on, not that i am an expert.
Hi Steve it's Samuel! Have you realised that the tenor at this tower has a similar hum to Stamfotd Hills tenor
@@Ringer_SamuelOwenLiamHell Samuel, lovely to hear from you and I hope your ringing is going well. The tenor at St Ann's always sounded odd, for some reason instead of the clapper hitting the bell the clapper had some form of rubber rings in it. I don't know if it still does.
Yes it still does! When they are ringing the tenor always sticks out to me. Especially at backstroke to tenor really hums.
@Ringer_SamuelOwenLiam I don't know why it has it on the tenor, I have the feeling my dad organised, he was a bell hanger for Whitechapel. I can still remember the two Trebles going in, it was 1957 and I was only 4.
@@Steven_Rowe Wow that must have been amazing to watch! I can't wait till I can go to St Anns belfry
Argh! My ears bleed.
But the ringing is lovely 🔔
@@timmeh1507 they're not the most tuneful, agreed, but they're not that bad - and they're very easy to ring well, which covers a multitude of sins 😁
Interesting to hear them as an eight.
@@simonbellringer it's the harmonics/hum off the back end, 1-4 seem good. Were they tuned when augmented?
@@timmeh1507 I believe they were tuned in the 1960s when they were rehung. Think the trebles were then a straight addition. Meant to look at the boards in the tower tonight but forgot!... maybe next week 😆
Shame i didn't know when you lot were up bedwellty I've always wanted to hear them bell for my self.
My home tower!
Lucky you - they are a super eight!
@@simonbellringerI know I love ringing there
3:50 wow the bells look amazing
What a lovely eight!
Another gorgeous heavy 5 as well as Stoke St Gregory.
Wilma?
They sound like the bells at Christchurch Cathedral, NZ
The tenor is a fine bell indeed! Wouldn't mind a grab here. They sound awesome
Yeah because I can tell by the noise & which bells are ringing
It's been a while simon, nice video! Good rining as always. Never dissappoints.
Thank you! Yes, sadly I don't film as much as I used to and only have limited time for RUclips at the mo. These were worth capturing tho! Glad to see my videos are appreciated at least 😊
These look like great fun 😁 do I spy James Sanderson and Alex Town as your compatriots?
You certainly do, good stalking! 😄 Yes, I've not had any three-bell for fun for ages, great to get back in practice 😁
I like these bells.
Why 2 tail ends on the tenor bell
Because it's big, so is sometimes rung with two people. One stands on the box and catches the sally as usual - the other, known as the "strapper", just helps with backstroke. Having the strap rope attached here also made it easier for two people to ring the bell up together. 🙂
@@simonbellringer Oh ok thanks
Bly me 20cwt 6 that is big.
There amazing!!!!.
Makes you wonder if a stay snaps and you hold on.... would be best to have a net 😁
That's cool
BLY ME!!!!!!!! A ringable 19cwt 5 on Plain Bearings!!!. But seen bigger 5 bells like East Pennard the heaviest 24cwt ringable 5 in the world with rope's & god wouldn't hardly rise them!!!! The world's heaviest 5 is East Bergholt up in Suffolk 26cwt 5 but there rung by hand & still ringable.
Absolutely beautiful, this is how bells should be rung, perfect striking, I was watch the chap who was ringing the no 11 bell, his is the the most perfect style of ringing I've ever seen in all my years of being a bellringer, well done to all the ringers that day, a perfectly rung quarter peal 👏👏
Stop bending knees and bending forward otherwise excellent
I like the sound of these. Reminds me of somewhere....
Bristol Minimus is an alliance method, not a surprise method!
Excellent bell 🔔
My god 13 cwt in Eb! They sound marginally better than castleton!
Oooh these are nice!! Some history behind them as well. Cannot beat a old and heavy boomy 8
Remind me of St Olave, Marygate.
Old school bells, but 5hey harmonise well as a peal.
Glorious bells in my opinion. Although I think they sound a lot heavier than they actually are.
25cwt and proud 🤣🫡
They're 25cwt which is rather light for C. Usually 25cwt comes with Eb or D
st johns are heavy they are gileltt and johnson william dobson anbd john taylor tenor 25-2-22cwts they are the only heaviest in the town
It’s just a noisy racket done by the inconsiderate.
Not you putting me off 😂
There horrible & what a lovely video!!!
Wonderful 8 as i said have rang here, Very enjoyable !
A bright eight. Sound similar to Epsom Common.
But how do they get up there? I visited the chapel and saw no doors to stairs.
What a cracking back eight. Tough bells but worth every effort. Well done.
The old 4th became the Tenor at Withycombe Raleigh - 17-1-10 1831 William Dobson
Brilliant, cheers Swebb - description updated with this!
The Cathedral do sound lovely, but I personally like the sound of St John's better, lovely grand bells with a lot of character!
@simonbellringer This is my home city, My home tower is Glinton about 15 minutes away. But I’ve also rung at St. Mary’s down the road from the cathedral. Good video as always!
Thank you! I have not yet rung at Glinton, although I've managed a few others nearby (the three Deepings, and Crowland). A video of St Mary's is due for upload soon, and of course you've already seen the main video featuring all the towers :-)
